Google Vacation Rentals Is Changing in Europe: What Hosts Need to Know in 2026
For years, Google Vacation Rentals gave vacation rental owners another way to appear in Google Search and send travelers directly to their own booking website.
That has now changed for European hosts.
Since September 8, 2026, Google has removed the Vacation Rentals unit from Google Search for users in the European Economic Area (EEA) as part of changes related to the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA).
So, what does this mean for vacation rental owners?
What Changed?
Previously, eligible vacation rentals could appear in Google's vacation rental search results with information such as:
Property photos Prices Availability Amenities Reviews A direct booking link
Google's own documentation explains that its vacation rental system was designed to send travelers directly to partner websites to complete their booking.
For users searching from EEA countries, however, this dedicated Vacation Rentals unit is no longer appearing in Google Search.
Google has said it hopes to bring back a vacation rental experience in the EEA in the future. Vacation rental feeds can also continue to support other Google surfaces, including Google Maps and Google hotel search, according to industry documentation.
Why Is Google Making This Change?
The change is connected to Google's ongoing compliance with the European Union's Digital Markets Act.
The DMA requires designated large digital platforms to change certain practices around how competing services are presented in search and other digital environments.
Google has introduced broader changes to European Search as part of this process. Reuters reported that Google believes some of these changes could increase the visibility of comparison and vertical-search services, while Google has also argued that they may negatively affect some businesses.
For vacation rental owners, the practical point is simple: one previously available Google visibility channel has changed.
Don't Depend on One Booking Channel
This change is another reminder that hosts should avoid relying entirely on a single platform for their bookings.
Your business may depend on Airbnb, Booking.com, Google, social media or another marketplace today. But these platforms can change their algorithms, visibility, fees and commercial models.
A stronger long-term strategy is to build several sources of demand.
That includes having your own professional website and direct booking system, while continuing to use OTAs where they make sense.

Your Website Matters More Than Ever
When travelers cannot find your property through one particular Google feature, your own digital presence becomes even more important.
Your website should clearly communicate:
- Where your property is located
- What type of accommodation you offer
- Your rooms, facilities and amenities
- Who the property is suitable for
- Local experiences and attractions
- Photos and reviews
- Availability and booking information
- A simple way to contact or book with you
A well-structured website can also help travelers discover your property through traditional Google Search, local search and increasingly through AI-powered travel discovery.

AI Search Is Another Opportunity
The way travelers discover accommodation is changing quickly.
Instead of searching only for:
"Sardinia apartment"
travelers may increasingly ask AI tools questions such as:
"Where should I stay in Sardinia for a quiet beach holiday with a private pool?"
This means your website needs to provide clear, detailed and trustworthy information that both travelers and search systems can understand.

What Should Vacation Rental Owners Do Now?
The Google change does not mean that direct bookings are becoming less important. It means that diversifying how travelers discover your property is becoming increasingly important.
Consider these five steps:
-
Build a strong direct-booking website Make it easy for travelers to understand your property and book directly.
-
Continue investing in SEO Create useful property and destination content that can appear in organic search.
-
Maintain your Google presence Keep your Google Business Profile, property information, photos and contact details accurate.
-
Prepare for AI-powered discovery Make your website detailed, structured and useful enough to answer real traveler questions.
-
Reduce dependence on a single OTA or platform Use OTAs as important distribution channels while building your own direct relationship with guests.

The Future of Vacation Rental Discovery
Google Vacation Rentals was an important source of visibility for many property owners, but it was never the only way travelers could discover accommodation.
Search is evolving toward a combination of organic search, maps, OTAs, social media, direct websites and AI-powered recommendations.
For independent hosts, the goal should therefore be to build a business that does not depend entirely on any single discovery channel.
Your property, your website and your relationship with your guests remain assets that you control.
